Algeria: 4.100 journalists work in 300 news outlets including 79 daily newspapers
The Written press in Algeria achieved during the last years, large progress in terms of quantity and quality and the number of newspapers reaches 300 in 2009 after they were 50 in the nineties.The numbers of copies jumped from 750.000 to 2.5 million per day, 90% are Daily Newspaper editions. 3.000 journalists, 56% of them work for private newspapers.

Official figures by the written press directorate at the state directorate in charge of communication (former Ministry of Communication) show a significant increase in the number of newspapers in Algeria during the last past 20 years, noticing a significant development, reaching 300 newspapers, including Daily newspapers that are on top of the list 79 daily newspapers with 2.4 million copies a day out of the total 2.5 million copies.

Although the weekly newspapers and magazines are ranked second with 68, their copies remain far from the daily newspapers’ copies with 94.000 copies per day and 2.5 million copies are shared by the various newspapers including the institutional and official newspapers.

The private sector tops the list of the newspapers and magazines in Algeria, after the emergence of the new newspapers during the last five years.

Newspapers that are written in Arabic are 40 however French newspapers are 39, this slight rise of the Arabic newspapers started during the years 2008-2009.

Daily newspapers in Algeria still achieve the largest number of copies in the printing agencies before the nineties and after the new millennium.

In order to serve the media landscape in Algeria, the media institutions recruited 4.100 journalists, including 3.000 in the written press and 1.000 in the audiovisual media, and 2.500 journalists work in the private sector and the remaining 500 in the public sector, including 800 reporters across the various regions of the country.
