League of Arab States needs a comprehensive and profound reform, the Minister of Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and League of Arab States, Abdelkader Messahel, told the APS, on Monday.

“Algeria proposed a comprehensive and profound reform, recalling the existence of a report on the reform under the title Lakhdar Brahimi” – carrying the name of the former Foreign Minister – a few years ago.

“We have noted that the world is facing conflicts without resorting to means of settling them. This situation is caused by paralysis in the Arab League system. We presented the curricula that should be reviewed and this is what Algeria proposed. We want a profound reform of the Arab League”.

“This reform is being carried out by a working group that was created during the 147th Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers of the League, chaired by Algeria. A meeting of Permanent Representatives of Member States on this subject is scheduled to be held soon. Decisions of this meeting are also expected to be presented in the coming session of the the Arab League Ministers’ Council”.

“We made our contribution and we have some ideas. Algeria is a country that lived through the transformations of the African Union. There was a transformation of the Organization of African Unity into the African Union which is the result of profound reforms”.

“It is this real reform of African action that made the African Union more effective, because the African continent resolved many continental problems, and it witnessed an important governance movement, and positive growth rates of 8%, and even more, Africa’s voice untied in the international meetings”.
