Algeria Counts 43 Million Inhabitants On 1st January 2019

The number of Algerian inhabitants jumped to 43 million on 1 January 2019, from 42.2 million on 1 January 2018, according to figures from the National Statistics Office (ONS) released on Tuesday 28th of May via the official news agency.

The resident population in Algeria was set at 42.578 million on 1 July 2018 and the number of live births reached 1.038 million, down 2% from 2017.
The distribution of these live births by sex gives: 104 boys for every 100 girls, according to relevant ONS statistics.

This drop in the volume of births affected the crude birth rate, which fell by one point from 25.40 per thousand to 24.39 per thousand between the two comparison periods, according to the same source. The fertility rate fell by 0.1 percentage points to three (3) children per woman.

In addition, natural increase reached 845,000 people, with a natural growth rate of 1.99%, down 0.1 points from 2017, the Office said.

This is due to the decline in the volume of births in 2018 and compared to 2017 and the increase in the volume of deaths.
Overall, 2018 was marked by a significant increase in the volume of deaths, a further decline in the volume of marriages and stagnation in the number of divorces.
Improving life expectancy:
Begun in 2014, the slump in the number of marriages continued in 2018. Civil registrars registered 332,000 unions, nearly 8,000 fewer marriages than in 2017.
With regard to divorce, the services of the Ministry of Justice indicated that 65,690 breakdowns of unions were pronounced in 2018, thus recording a stagnation compared to the year before.
On the other hand, the ONS reported last year had seen a near stagnation in the infant mortality rate for the second consecutive year.
Indeed, the volume of child deaths reached 21,846 cases in 2018, a decrease of nearly 400 deaths compared to the previous year.
Life expectancy at birth has increased by an estimated one-tenth of a point to 77.7 years overall, 77.1 years for men and 78.4 years for women.
Assuming that last year’s growth rate is maintained, the total resident population in Algeria will reach 43.9 million on 1 January 2020, according to the ONS.
