Terrorists behind Algeria December 11 attacks were responsible for an attack on a bus carrying foreigners in Algiers in late 2006, investigators say.

  • The terrorist group was planning to carry out suicide attacks on a military barracks in Cherchel (west of Algiers), a police department, a police station and the foreign ministry’s headquarters in Algiers, according to the same source.
  • The attacks were planned by Sofiane Fassila in coordination with Abdelhamid Abu Torab, leader of Farouk Brigade operating in Lakhdaria, Boumerdes and Tizi Ouzou.
  • An architect arrested in January 2008 for the December 11 attacks told investigators he targeted the employees of an American company based in Algiers, Echorouk has learnt.
  • He joined the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) in early November 2006. His first mission was to buy ammunition to terrorists and ensure contacts to them.
  • The attack targeted a bus carrying American workers killing their driver. It was considered as a foiled attack because none of the foreign employees was killed.
