Algeria: Emergency cabinet meeting to discuss relationships with Libya
Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia convened an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the Algerian-Libyan relationships for the first time since the crisis broke out in Libya, Echorouk has learnt.
- Ministers of defence, interior, justice and a representative of foreign ministry attended the meeting.
- This came as events in Libya developed while the NATO’s forces failed on resolving the problem. The Libyan Transitional Council is still accusing Algeria of sending mercenaries and cars to support Gaddafi’s forces.
- Fears are growing in Algeria of the Libyan events possible impact on security situation in the eastern-southern borders of the country.
- Sources said the Prime Minister heard the presentations of sensible sectors ministers including Delegate Minister in charge of National Defence Abdelmalek Guenaizia and Foreign Minister’s representative.
- Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci is on a two-day visit to Washington to present a road map suggested by the African Union to find a peaceful solution to the Libyan conflict.
- “Algeria totally respected the UN Security Council’s resolutions,” Medelci said stressing the impotance of preserving Libya’s unity and ceasefire.
- He also said weapons and money transfer in the Sahel may encourage terrorism due to the Libyan crisis.
- Algeria’s fears of the situation in Libya have become confirmed and declared through the emergency cabinet meeting to talk about the Algerian-Libyan relationships.
