Algeria-EU deal paves way for broad cooperation in energy sector
Algeria and the European Union signed a memorandum of understanding on Sunday to boostenergycooperation, EU commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said in Algiers.
“This is a strategic document, a tool to develop energy cooperation between Algeria and the EU,” he told a joint press conference with Algerian Prime Minister AbdelmalekSellal.
The agreement, which was under negotiation since 2008, was signed by Barroso and Prime Minister AbdelmalekSellal during a high-profile official ceremony held Sunday in Algiers.
It covers a broad section of cooperation in the conventional and renewable energy sectors, as well as the transfer of technology, and is expected to help scale up investment flows in Algeria.

Prime MinisterSellalindicated for his part that the twosidesweredetermined to further shore up bilateralcooperation in variousfields of endeavournotablythoserelated to technological innovation, energy, industry and services.
Mr. AbdelmalekSellal also expressed the wish to reach a broad consensus with the European Union concerning the pending customs tariffs’ issue and the granting of a preferential status to Algerian non-hydrocarbons exported products within the European bloc.
Algeria is Europe’s third largest supplier of natural gas after Russia and Norway, meeting 13-15 percent of the needs of the 28-member bloc.
