Algeria Is Coordinating With Arab Countries For The Sake Of Syria’s Return to Arab League
Iraqi MP Jassem Mohamed Jaâfar said his country is coordinating with Algeria so as to ensure Syria’s comeback to the Arab League, as the country was expelled several years ago from the Pan Arab Organization following the country’s steeping into a civil war that woefully continues until today.
“Iraq, Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia strongly back up the return of Syria to its normal status and its renewed membership of the Arab League,” the Iraqi Information Agency quoted Mr Jassem Mohamed as saying after Damascus’ suspension in February 2011 under pressure from Gulf states that were supporting the “revolution” against the Syrian regime.
“Egypt is the most prominent player in being a strong ally with Russia, as it dominates the Arab League administratively, which makes Cairo’s support for this file very positive,” he added.
Iraq is considered one of the countries most supportive of Bashar al-Assad’s regime because of its close relationship with Iran, which is the most prominent ally of Damascus alongside the Russian Federation.
According to the same source, the countries that support the lifting of the freeze on Syria in the Arab League, don’t however intend to stand with Bachar El Assad in his war against the opposition, but what matters, as the MP said, is the stability of the Middle East and the Arab region.
Media sources have referred to movements spearheaded led by Egypt in cooperation with a number of Arab countries to ensure the return of Syria to the Arab League, embodied by the invitation sent to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to attend the upcoming Arab summit due in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) next month.
Algeria has not stopped calling on Arab countries to halt the freezing of Syria’s membership of the Arab League.
This was stated by Foreign Affairs Minister Abdelkader Messahel on more than one occasion.
Mr. Messahel also visited Damascus and met with the Syrian President.
Algeria has also refused to pull out its Ambassador from Damascus, as was recommended in the recent past by the Arab League.
