Algeria Is Not Ready To Join The WTO

Algeria’s negotiations to join accession the World Trade Organization (WTO) stopped completely in light of the economic circumstance, which Algeria is passing through and which is characterized by a decline of oil prices, and the erosion of incomes to more than the half, which confirms that Algeria is facing a domestic deficit of products in the current circumstances, and is unable to face products of more than 160 countries, knowing that last week noticed the accession of Liberia to the WTO once and for all, to be then the member 163.

Trade Ministry did not program, since the beginning of the year, any bilateral meeting, or a meeting for Algeria’s accession to the World Trade Organization, so the consultations between the two parties noticed a white year, in light of the unwillingness of Algeria, which has recently imposed licenses to regulate the import and the list of products that are prohibited from entering the national market, because they are locally produced, to grab a visa to enter this organization, especially the exports outside hydrocarbons, with no calculation of phosphate and derivatives of hydrocarbons which did not exceed the limit of $ 1 billion.

Economic expert, Fares Mesdour, thinks that the Trade Ministry chose the perfect solution, by closing  its eyes from joining the WTO, at present, despite the high number of Member States, which reached 163 countries, after the accession of Liberia recently.

“Current situation does not tend in favour of the initiative to enter the building of the world body, to which the law of the jungle is applied, as the strong product eats the weak product in the market, and since Algeria is not ready to compete with the products of these countries, as these countries will be currently unable to break into the major global markets”.

“Signing a visa to join the WTO will lead to flooding the national market with various countries’ products, based on the differential agreements, but in return the Algerian products will not be allowed to progress in order to enter foreign markets, by virtue of the low-quality, given that they are mostly new experiences in the field of manufacturing, which will eliminate the Algerian product in the bud, and the Algerian government categorically refused to deal with Israel, which is one of the thorny issues that have hindered Algeria’s accession to the WTO, even in the era of financial affluence”.
