Algeria: No Scholarships To Study Abroad For Excellent BAC Candidates

The decision to stop granting the scholarships for excellent BAC candidates students was issued in 2008 and is still valid because it was not repealed with a new decision, in order to avoid the migration of more Algerian brains to the developed countries, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Tayeb Bouzid, responds to a query by a new bac graduate.

Tayeb Bouzid explained, in response to the concerns of one of the Excellent bac candidate who obtained the graduation in June 2019 on the granting scholarships to study abroad, saying: “I am a student who obtained an excellent rate in the baccalaureate, how can I benefit from the state’s scholarship to study abroad. The minister responds: “There are currently no scholarships to continue studying abroad for those who are excellent in the baccalaureate and the decision that was taken 11 years ago under the former president Bouteflika is still valid and was not canceled by a new resolution.”

The scholarship grant was abolished following a decision of the former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, during a ceremony honoring the Excellent students of the bac exam in 2008, in order to preserve the brightest young people in the homeland and put an end to the growing brain drain, which caused large losses worth billions to the state treasury, especially after field reports confirmed that most of the students who benefited from scholarships in the level of “gradation” abroad did not return to the homeland after completing their university studies, considering that Algeria was at an earlier stage granting such training for the excellent students because many of the disciplines were not available, unlike what is the case today because opportunities for training are available in most disciplines and across the various states of the country.

The government canceled scholarships for students who were awarded baccalaureate graduation in order to complete their studies at the world’s most prestigious universities because the scholarships were limited to the second and third stages only after a thorough examination of the students’ files according to strict conditions.

The “pedagogical treatment” of the new students’ choices, which began on the 27th of July, shows that most of them obtained the first choice out of four choices and two choices for the first high school graduates in the baccalaureate exam.
