Algeria: retired workers to get 10 percent pension raise
Retired workers called on the government to increase their pensions to 10 percent as the cost of living is on the rise. This raise is equal to 2,500-10,000 DA while the number of retired employees in Algeria is estimated at around 2.3 million.
The National Fund of Retirement held a meeting on Tuesday to examine an annual raise in pensions. Representatives of the Retired Pensioners’ National Federation asked for 10 percent raise.
“The government must increase housewives’ pension to 3,500 DZ from 2,500 DZ,” the federation’s Secretary General Ahmed Kadiri told Echorouk.
He added that the Algerian work ministry can afford to raise retirement pension by 10 percent.
A total of 50 percent of pensioners earn 25,000 DZ per month compared to 4,000 who earn 100,000 DZ. The rest of retired workers earn 15,000 DZ.
The federation also calls for raising retirement pension to 100 percent instead of 75 percent as workers spent their whole life in the service of the national economy. “It is unbelievable that the government deprives them of a total pension. They deserve a decent life,” said Kadiri.
