Algeria Takes Over the Presidency of the UN African Group
Algeria assumed the presidency of the African Group in Nairobi starting on Wednesday.
This ensures the coordination of African groups’ positions at the level of United Nations programs, including the United Nations Environment Program and the United Nations Habitat Program, which are present in the Kenyan capital.
On the occasion of a meeting of African ambassadors and permanent representatives, held yesterday, Thursday, at the United Nations headquarters in Nairobi, Ambassador Boumediene Mahi officially assumed his duties as President of the African Group, succeeding the Ambassador of Somalia in Nairobi, Amb Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle.
The meeting was an opportunity for representatives of African countries to congratulate the Algerian ambassador, wishing success to Algeria, which is called upon during its presidency to “play a leading role during the meetings and events included in the agenda of the United Nations Environment and United Nations Habitat programmes”.
On this occasion, Ambassador Boumediene Mahi stressed that “Algeria has the skills, experience and expertise necessary to raise Africa’s voice loudly”, calling for “a greater presence and prominence for the African continent in the UN forums in Nairobi”, since these programmes “address issues related to the environment and sustainable development that are of great importance to Africa”.
It should be recalled that the United Nations Environment Programme was established in 1972 to coordinate the activities of the United Nations in the field of environment and provide the necessary assistance to member countries to develop and implement their environmental policies.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) established in 1977 aims to promote the construction of sustainable cities and decent housing for all.
