Algeria to focus on green energies in the future
The energy regulatory commission has announced the creation of 67 power plants by 2020 with a total capacity of 2.357 megawatts as part of the renewable energies developing project.

These power stations will be scattered across 20 provinces based in the northern, southern and highland areas of the country. Four types of energies have been selected to fulfil this ambitious program namely; solar, heat, wind power and hybrid ( solar – gas) ones.

A recent assessment released by the energy ministry has revealed that the chapter that deals with solar energy and photovoltaic cells includes 27 projects designed to produce 638 megawatts with the creation of the biggest power station in the province of Djelfa with a capacity of 48 megawatts.

The commission in charge of the elaboration of the national energy and gas strategies has indicated that solar energy will hold the “lion share” in the program with the creation of 6 power plants in the northern and southern provinces with a total capacity of 1350 megawatts.

The power stations will be scattered across various provinces namely; Tamanrasset, Adrar, Ilizi, Becahr, Naama, Ain Salah, Mechria, Saida, Medea, Tindouf, Beni Abbas, Abadla and Djelfa.

260 megawatts will be produced through wind power with the creation of the biggest power plant with a capacity of 50 megawatts and a lesser one with a capacity of 20 megawatts in the southern province of Adrar.

The government has given its go ahead for a project designed for the production of 40% of the country’s demand of energy by the year 2030 through renewable energies.

Some $ 220 billion have been allocated to produce 22000 megawatts by 2030, half of the capacity will be exported to Europe and the other part for the domestic demand.

A first hybrid power plant with a capacity of 150 megawatts has been inaugurated last July in the province of Hass R’mel , southern Algeria, as part of joint venture with Spanish partners.

The total cost of the project was estimated at $ 450 million.
