The Algerian government will examine the possibility of attenuating retirement procedures for women. The latest cabinet meeting came up with the decision to fix women’s retirement age at 55. A new suggestion may reduce it to 47.

A spokesman for the General Union of Algerian Workers Ferhat Chabekh said all the union’s members are on vacation from July 20th until August 20th. They first issue they will tackle after coming back to work is the classification of “hard professions.”

He added that the union will also deal with women’s retirement along with all the problem they face in their daily life.

“Women have to play two roles at the same time. They have to do housework and looking after their family. Because of that, they need additional years in retirement,” he said.

“Do not compare between women and men. Our aim is to preserve society. We will explain all those points to the Prime Minister. There can be equality between women and men in wages but not in retirement,” he added.
