Algeria: Traders “inflame” prices immediately after the visit of trade Minister Benyounes!
The Exhibition Palace on the outskirts of Algiers which has recently dedicated a large space to the marketing of locally-made wide consumption products at the initiative of the Ministry of trade, in order to break prices during the month of Ramadhan, has witnessed bitter quarrels between traders and customers about the surprising high prices displayed on the stalls.
Disgruntled customers on the spot have strongly lambasted the traders for abruptly hiking the staple commodity prices on the first day of the holy month of fasting of Ramadhan despite the assurances made earlier for the setting of affordable prices by the trade minister Amara Benyouners himself.
The angry customers said they had been baffled to see the prices of most basic commodities and vegetables literally spiral upward by more than 50% once the trade minister Amara Benyounes wrapped up on Wednesday his inspection visit to these special Ramadhan markets, primarily designed to allow low-income earners do their shopping during this holy month of fasting.
Amid general confusion and recriminations, everyone complained by pointing an accusing finger at these venal traders, who have been granted by the state an opportunity to market their products to the customers directly, without paying any centime in taxes and as a result the ball is now obviously in the trade ministry’s camp for early remedial measures.
