Algeria: two men sentenced to prison for fighting attempt in Iraq

A court in Algiers sentenced two men to three years in prison Sunday for working with fighters in Iraq in 2003-2006.

  • The suspects started supporting jihad thoughts since the American occupation of Iraq in 2003. They tried to go to the country across Syrian borders to join fighters. As they reached the borders, they were arrested by Syrian security forces and deported to Algeria.

  • Suspect Z.M. said he has nothing to do with Al-Qaeda but he admitted that he believed in jihad thoughts and wanted to go to Iraq. The other man K.A. said he was watching new about the occupation of Baghdad on TV and was listening to preachers’ call to help the Iraqi people. In the beginning, he called the Algerian Red Crescent to help him reach IraqSyria and what he did exactly. “I arrived to Syria and I started looking for the Iraqi embassy to ask about how to enter Iraq but I could not did that,” he told the judge. but he was told they needed doctors and nurses.
