In Algeria’s first official reaction towards the exit of Britain from the European Union (Brexit), spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Abdelaziz Ben Ali Charif, said on Sunday that Algeria will expand and deepen the partnership with the United Kingdom, and give a new impetus to the agreement of strategic partnership that is linking the European Union.

“Algeria recorded the UK withdrawal from the European Union. This sovereign decision of the people of the United Kingdom led to a new condition, that may have a profound impact on international relationships in the field of European cooperation with the rest of the world”.

“Algeria embarked on the construction of multiple bilateral and fruitful partnerships with the United Kingdom. It will continue to work on expanding and deepening the bilateral relationships for the benefit of the two countries, as it will work, especially during the assessment and updating the current partnership agreement with the European Union, to give satisfactory results for both sides. Algeria hopes to see the actual withdrawal of the United Kingdom in the best of circumstances, in order to avoid or minimize, in a holistic and interconnected world, the severity of the expected tensions, as a result of this development which affects structurally the European edifice. Algeria will continue to follow the developments in this matter.”
