Statistics were conducted by the Italian organization in cooperation with the National Union of Consumer Protection, shows that the Algerian citizen spent twice his salary to buy food which is thrown into the garbage, especially bread, at a time when Algeria imported food products worth two billion dollars of wheat over the past year, making it being classified as the third Global Importer of wheat.
National Union of Consumer Protection announced on statistics that are described as dangerous, which reports that 75% of Algerians, spend half their monthly wage to buy food that is thrown into the garbage, especially in Ramadan, saying that the reason is the absence of a culture of conservation guidance among citizens, what made the union think of launching a national campaign on waste in the holy month of Ramadan.
In this regard the President of the NUCP, Mahfoud Harzeli, said during a press conference at the forum of the newspaper “DK news”, on Tuesday, that this campaign will coincide with the beginning of the holy month, which will also notice the opening of new markets, at the beginning of the next June 13, a week before Ramadan, in coordination with the Commerce Ministry, and the General Union of Algerian Workers, where Abdelmajid Sidi Said previously revealed on the opening of solidarity markets for the benefit of workers, to sell affordable food products, adding that these markets will particularly sell agricultural products.
Harzelli also explained that the aim of the operation is to curb speculators who are taking advantage of Ramadan to double the various food and consumer prices, adding that prices in these markets across the country will be at reasonable given that the product will be directly sold from the producer to the consumer without intermediaries, so as the traders will not monopolize the products throughout Ramadan, so the abundance of products will be across markets, as the NUCP will accompany the process by spreading consumer protection’s culture among citizens.
