Algerian Defence Ministry seeks tighter military and security ties to combat terrorism

The Algerian Ministry of Defence announced Wednesday, that a meeting was held at the six military region between heads of the Algerian, Mauritanian, Nigerian and Malian armies, for tight coordination to combat the transcontinental crime and terrorism.

  • The ministry of defence said the meeting, the first of the kind, falls in the framework of tightening military and security cooperation between these African countries.
  • The four countries’ army chief commanders, inspected, during the meeting, and discussed the ways and mechanisms of strengthening cooperation in order to combat the cell of organized crime on the borders, particularly terrorism.
  • The Algerian Ministry of Defence said in a media statement that the meeting was an opportunity for all these countries to raise issues of common interest and exchange views.
  • This meeting comes, according to observers, following the suicide attack which targeted the French Embassy in Nouakchot leaving injured, by a youngster who was trained in the north Malian terrorist camp, on the Malian and Algerian borders, as informed sources said the coordination of intelligence to face threats by the terrorist group GSPC or AQIM, which seeks to transfer its attacks outside Algeria, in an attempt to confirm that it is a regional group following announcement on joining Al Qaeda and changing its name to AQIM, will be the main focus of the debate.
  • Algeria will present, in this meeting its experience in combating the suicide attacks which used explosive belts, following its success in thwarting many of this type of terrorist operations in Tadmait, Tizi Ouzou, east of Algiers and Ghelizane.
