Algerian Diplomacy: Activation of the African Humanitarian Agency
The added value sought from activating the African Humanitarian Agency is to establish a purely African approach in dealing with humanitarian issues, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, confirmed, on Saturday, in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.
In his speech on the item related to the activation of the African Humanitarian Agency, which he delivered during the work of the 45th session of the Executive Council of the African Union, which began on Thursday in Accra, Attaf said; “The Algerian delegation would like to emphasize three main facts. The first is our belief that the added value sought from activating the African Humanitarian Agency consists of devoting a purely African approach to dealing with humanitarian issues.”
“It is an approach that stems from the African reality, an approach that is consistent with the accelerating pace of the aggravation of conflicts on our continent, and an approach that upholds the values of solidarity and interdependence that established the unitary African project,” Attaf added.
The second factor – Attaf explained – is “the emphasis on the need to ensure close coordination and effective integration between the African Humanitarian Agency and the various African Union mechanisms responsible for responding to humanitarian crises, most notably the AU Civil Capacity Mechanism for Disaster Preparedness and Response.”
As for the third and final factor, Attaf confirmed that it is about “supporting the proposal submitted by the Commission regarding the composition of the organizational structure of this humanitarian agency, with a call for accelerating the establishment of regional centres for the same agency and providing it with the necessary logistical and financial capabilities.”
The Algerian delegation stressed that choosing Uganda to host the agency’s headquarters will significantly contribute to addressing the urgent challenges facing our continent in the humanitarian field.
