A court in Algiers sentenced a former Guantanamo detainee to 20 years in prison in absentia Sunday for working with a terrorist group abroad.

  •
  • Ahmed Belbacha, 40, was arrested by Pakistani security forces and was taken to Guantanamo in 2001. He was released in early 2009 and chose to be deported to the UK. In 2004, an international arrest mandate was issued against him for working with a terrorist group abroad.
  •
  • Earlier in late 2008, two Guantanamo detainees were deported to Algeria and were acquitted while a British family has recently asked US President Barack Obama to receive Belbacha.
