Algerian security forces killed five suicide bombers
Confirmed sources told Echorouk that the security services arrested many people during the last two weeks in various districts of Algiers.

These suspects were arrested on charges of belonging to the cells that support the Salafist Group for Combat and Preaching “GSPC” also called Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, under the leadership of Abdelmalek Droudkel; nicknamed Abou Mosaab Abdulouadoud.

The security sources refused to provide details about this operation, however, a security official, working on the fight against terrorism, said this security operation is one of the traditional activities of the security services that are responsible for combating terrorism and they are preventive measures to thwart any suicide attacks the terrorist group is seeking to implement in April 11 and after two years of the first suicide attacks in Algeria.

Echorouk’s sources said a terrorist was arrested and he might provide some information about the supporting networks that are deployed by the terrorist group in the various popular districts of Algiers recruiting 21 to 25 year old youngsters.

Previously, the anti-terrorism services stepped up the work of intelligence in order to thwart the terrorist plans, particularly since Droudkel’s group is betting on Algiers as a perfect place to attract the media and win more fame then prove existence.

Both the PM Ahmed Ouyahia and the Minister of Interior, Nouredine Yazid Zerhouni, did not exclude the implementation of terrorist attacks in light of the military operation saying “The Algerian government is controlling the security situation; however, we can’t say we are completely free from any terrorist attacks. We must not exaggerate and we must be optimistic because the security situation in Algeria has improved”.

The PM went Saturday morning to the Government Palace, which was targeted by a suicide bomber on board of a car containing a huge quantity of explosives in the 11th April 2007, accompanied by the Minster of Interior and the Minister Delegate, Dehou Weld Kablia, as well as the General Director of the civil protection in order to mourn the civilian victims of the suicide attack.

The PM reiterated the need for more vigilance by the citizens in order to help the security service combat terrorism “The powerful weapon to combat the terrorist attacks is the vigilance of the citizens and public authorities as well as the security forces”.

Ouyahia also praised sacrifices of the victims of terrorism that “have not been in vain”. He said that the 9 April presidential elections are the best evidence of the glory and resilience of the Algerians who insisted on voting to confirm that Algeria is always strong.
