Amar Bendjama: We Welcome the Libyan Municipal Elections’ Success

Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, delivered a speech on behalf of the “A3+” group, represented by Ghana, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Algeria, during the Security Council meeting on Libya today, Monday, December 16.

Bendjama said in his speech that “the ‘A3+’ group welcomes the success of the elections in 58 Libyan municipalities, representing an important step towards strengthening local governance and enhancing stability in the country.”

The Algerian diplomat also called on all the “Libyan parties to refrain from taking measures that hinder these positive steps, cancel unilateral measures that increase tensions, and prioritize dialogue in a spirit of compromise.”

The spokesman praised the High National Elections Commission’s process management, and welcomed “the proposal of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to revitalize the political process, enhance confidence between the main parties and pave the way for national elections.”

As the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya approaches its end next January, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, expressed the concern of the A3+ group over the lack of progress in appointing a new special representative and renewed the group’s call for the appointment of a special representative for the mission.
