Anarchical recruitment behind suicide attempts among policemen

Policemen attempt to kill themselves because a large number of them were recruited with no regard to their capacity of facing pressure, a conference moderator said Thursday.

• “Some executives and police officers face professional harassment,” said the moderator.
• Dalila Zouad, a psychologist at the National Security General Department said a prevention strategy against suicide attempts was adopted at police personnel.
• “The number of suicide attemps among policemen can not be disclosed. It is a professional secret,” she said in the conference organized by Mahfoud Boussebssi enterprise in Algiers.
• She presented the comprehensive strategy and determined the factors behind suicide attempts like familiar problems, workplace tension, tiredness and psychological pressure.
• She added that police chiefs do not valorise their employees’ performance. “That causes disappointment among policemen who deal with crimes, traffic accidents and terror attacks everyday.”
• “Because of that, death becomes something banal.”
• She said security department mobilised psychologists in Algeria to help security employees including guard borders, judicial policemen and public security forces.
