Annahda Movement calls for free-wheeling debate in Parliament on January riots
The Annahda movement has called for a freeze of the outcome of the report drafted by a special parliamentary commission on the whys and wherefores of the street riots over hikes in food commodity prices which left 8 dead and over 800 wounded in several parts of Algeria in early January 2011.
- Annahda described such a report as warped and called for the holding of a broad-based and free-wheeling debate at the national popular assembly to enlighten the national public opinion about the underlying reasons which sparked off popular discontent leading to street rioting.
- Annahda also stressed that that the 3 parties forming the presidential alliance including the FLN, the RND and the MSP should be held accountable for the January events.
- The commission’s final report concluded that the street riots last January were “spontaneous and were not politically-motivated arguing that the blame should not be pinned on the authorities”.
