Arab Parliament: Algeria Elected as First Vice President
Algeria was elected as the first vice president of the Arab Parliament on Saturday, October 26, at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in Cairo, during a procedural session to elect a new president.
According to a statement by the National Assembly, the elections resulted in Mohammed Ahmed Al Yamahi, a member of the UAE’s Federal National Council (FNC), winning the position of Speaker of the Arab Parliament, succeeding Adel Ben Abderrahman Al-Assoumi, a member of Bahrain’s Shura Council.
The structures of the Arab Parliament and its bureau were also renewed, including four vice presidents and four chairmen of the standing committees. The process resulted in Algeria being elected as the first vice-president of the Arab Parliament, represented by a member of the National Assembly, Fouad Sebouta, with 58 votes out of 63.
The National Assembly stated that Algeria’s assumption of this position constitutes “a new opportunity to consolidate the Algerian Parliament’s contribution to activating the mechanisms of joint Arab parliamentary work, and highlighting Algeria’s positions on the most important Arab issues, most notably the just Palestinian cause.”
