Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf said Monday that Algeria is devoting its mandate at the UN Security Council (UNSC) to champion just causes, particularly the Palestinian cause and the issue of Western Sahara.

“Our guide in the Security Council is the instructions of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which constitute a roadmap for Algeria through major axes,” Attaf said at the beginning of a press seminar on the outcome of the activities of Algerian diplomacy in 2024, noting that ”Algeria has submitted several draft resolutions and statements to the Security Council to curb the Zionist aggression against Gaza.”

During the seminar, which came under the directive of the President of the Republic during his address to the nation before the two chambers of parliament, Algeria reintroduced the full membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations Organization “on its rightful basis,” added the Minister of State.

Regarding the issue of Western Sahara, Attaf said that Algeria’s position “derives its strength and correctness from historical constants that cannot be falsified because it is an unfinished decolonization issue.”

“The Sahrawi people are the masters of their inalienable right and the Moroccan occupation is a full-fledged intrusion that cannot be legitimized as inevitable,” he said. “Any formula for a solution to the Western Sahara issue that is inconsistent with decolonization is a myth, such as autonomy,” he said.

As for the African continent, Algeria will focus on “the fight against terrorism in Africa by organizing a ministerial meeting of the council to discuss the spread of the scourge across the continent,” the minister added.

The presidency of the UN Security Council is held by all its permanent and non-permanent members for a period of one month in rotation, using the alphabetical order of the names of the member states in English.

The United States holds the rotating presidency of the council in December, with Algeria to succeed it in the coming New Year.
