Algeria’s army foiled the attempted smuggling of more than 150 kalachnikovs and 1.5 tons of ammunition on Sunday in the province of Adrar close to the Algerian -Malian borders, according to well-informed sources.

  • “The army forces were keeping watch on three suspicious cars in a desert area in Adrar called Hassi Tideken far from the Mauritanian Algerian borders,”the same sources told Echorouk.
  • They started chasing the suspects believed to belong to a large-scale smuggling network operating along the Algerian- Malian- Mauritanian borders.
  • The chasing forces which included the army and border guards were backed by helicopters meant to prevent the cars from infiltrating into Kalab Ark where it is impossible to catch smugglers.
  • The sources said the three cars were destroyed but it did not mention the number of the  smugglers killed during the operation. The number of the chased smugglers is said to not less than four, according to a source close to the military operation.
  • The army forces seized 150 different weapons,  a considerable quantity of war ammunition and cell phones.
