Constitution: Prime Minister ought to resign after the election of the president
Algerian president and Prime Minister
The head of foreign affairs council at the senate, Boudjemaa Souilah has yesterday declared to “Echorouk†that the Algerian constitution is quiet clear and that the Prime Minister has to step down after the election of a new president, and it’s up to the new commander in chief to accept it or not.

This clarification comes to contradict previous analysis which limited the role of the head of the government to a mere “coordinator” whose main task is to execute the president’s program.

The senator commented on the view that the new constitution doesn’t compel the Prime Minister to resign after the election of a president as being “fallacious” saying “What if another president was elected instead.. Obviously the Prime Minister will resign and his successor will work on a new program which he will present to the parliament”.

The senator based his argumentation on article 77 of the constitution which stipulates “ The president heads the ministerial council and appoints the Prime Minister or ends up his task”
