Customs: “Pervasive corruption in Algiers' dry docks”
According to an official report drafted of late by the Algerian customs services, the dry docks and the customs depots managed by public and private economic enterprises are beset by a lot of disruptions.
- In a bid to curtail tension and lessen the duration of customs clearance, these dry docks and customs depots attract an average of 150.000 containers annually that is 40% of the total of containers which transit through the port of Algiers.
- The report says that large amounts of banned products have been discovered by customs agents.
- They were destined to be funneled to several regions of the country through fictitious commercial transactions made possible thanks to blameworthy practices of corruption and bribery.
- The report also points to the glaring absence of permanent customs’ surveillance and control at the level of customs stations located outside the port.
