Security services intervene to stop the riots

Mostaghanem, west of Algeria, noticed Monday violent riots, for a long time, by 25 year -old youngsters, most of them suffer from unemployment and coming from poor neighbourhoods.

  • They seat everyday in pavements and pedestrian lanes near the popular market of Ain Essafra in order to sell various products, including food and cloths.
  •
  • Their illegal trade obliged the local authorities to expel them from these places Monday morning, but they refused to leave, that’s why security services were obliged to intervene,; particularly when they started burning and destroying public properties.
  •
  • The clashes turned to a revolution and the centre of the city was transformed in a very short time to a city of ghosts after the scenes of burned shops, cars, restaurants, cafeterias and libraries.
  •
  • Some owners of these commercial properties were obliged to shut their shops fearing destruction and fires after the demonstrators invaded the centre of the city taking advantage from the absence of security and public services.
  •
  • After one hour, orders of intervention were given to the security forces and anti-riots services which used tear gas in order to disperse the demonstrators and spread over the main streets of the city to stop the riots.
  •
  • Many people injured, including four security members and 26 youngsters were arrested after one hour of the “revolution”.
