Dismissed by British Gas Algeria: Myriem Mehdi continues hunger strike

The National Autonomous Union of Public Staff of Administration (SNAPAP), the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights (LADDH) and the National Committee for the Defense of the Sahara Workers have organized Sunday, before the press headquarters Tahar Djaout in Algiers, a rally to support Myriem Mehdi, in her 25th days of hunger strike to protest against dismissal by the British firm “British Gas Algeria” based in Hassi Messaoud, west of Algeria.  

  • The striker said breaking the contract is unreasonable and unlawful. The British company, for its part, argued that the employee has refused a new job with different hours. A, version that Myriem Mehdi said it is related to May 2007 at BG Algeria by a permanent contract.
  • The striker Myriem has been transferred to Zemirli hospital in Algiers, in the last two days, in an almost dangerous health situation due to a fall in blood pressure, hypoglycaemia, and complications of the urinary tract.
  • According to a representative of SNAPAP, Myriem Mehdi, 42, has lost 40% of its weight.
  • The support committee has condemned the refusal of the General Manager of BG Algeria offers mediation to resolve the problem.
  • The Mininster of Labor and Social Security, Tayeb Louh, asserted Saturday that Myriem Mehdi could seek inspection of work in order to be reinstated in her rights. For its part, the UGTA has shown no solidarity with the striker.
  • The committee Women of the SNAPAP sent a letter to the UK embassy in Algiers to alert the case of Mehdi Myriem.
