Dockers of Algiers port ask for Minister’s swift intervention

Dockers of Algiers port called on the transport Minister, Amar Tou, to intervene personally to settle the conflict sparked off after the resusal by the general manager of the port to listen to their grievances and to discuss the merits of the recent deal with “Dubai Ports World” which is now in charge of the project of containers' handling at Algiers port.

• “The administration refuses to talk to us or at least give us the necessary data as to the future of the Dockers who will work for the Emirates company,”  a representative of the group of Dockers, Salah Touati said.
• The workers asked the general manager to speak to them and give them sufficient guarantees on the nature of their work in the future, as well as overdue compensation for extra working hours and clarifying the conditions for night work and holidays and weekends because DPW decided the introduction of a global working plan applicable in the ports worldwide which provides for a 7/7day work schedule.
• “The port’s directorate is trying to ignore the workers’ compensation for the extra hours. The Dockers do not refuse to work for DPW, as many people think, but it must be good to clarify things for these workers in order to take the right decision away from any pressure,” Mr. Touati said.
• The Dockers also called on the Minister of Transport to visit Algiers Port and check out the bad working conditions there.
