Echorouk exclusive study: 30% of people from the middle class are university graduates

Money earners who have wages ranging between 20.000 and 30.000 dinars, belonging to the middle class, including university and middle school graduates represent 44.20%.

  • They are heads of families who stop their studies at the secondary stage, then university graduates with the volume of 30.76%, who have not been able to improve their income despite their high graduations, and then people with a primary level and illiterates, whose living depend on the basic needs in terms of food, clothing and household furnishing.
  • The study by specialists, supervised by Echorouk, show that over 30% of the people from the middle class are university and institutes graduates whose monthly wages did not exceed 30.000 dinars, and they are mostly working in the public sector, such as education and health, which attracts a significant number of graduates, although the wages network in this sectors still needs radical changes, so as to make it commensurate with the level of education, as well as with the low purchasing situation of the individual.
  • While about 25% of the people who receive between 20.000 and 30.000 dinars a month, are of low educational level, including those who never gone to school, brining us to a very important problem , which is the situation of oscillation and anarchy which is still dominating the wage policy in Algeria, thing which made the owners of graduations equal in terms of income with the illiterates and those with low educational level, due to the fact that many of the graduates find themselves obliged to choose any job, in order to escape the spectre of unemployment.
  • Despite the low salaries, the money owners and heads of families who are making money returns between 20.000 and 30.000 dinars have the basic needs that would guarantee at least a decent life, because 99.85% of them benefit from electricity and 99.84% benefit from water, 97.84% have bathrooms in their homes, and 90.11% benefit from the natural gas.
  • TVs, refrigerators and washing machines basic equipments and computers at the bottom of the list

  • The study show that the middle class in Algeria depend in their livelihood on the provision of essential household equipments, such as TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines, under the expectations of some people to acquire other equipments, that are still, according to some citizens, a waste of the families budgets.
  • 97.37% of the middle class families have TVs, 97.53% have refrigerators, 66.77% still use the traditional gas stoves, and only 60.59% use the water heater, while the electric food heater, the dish-washing machine and the freezer remain still a luxury for them, because of their limited incomes, compared to what is necessary in line with the budget.
  • Some families of the middle class look forward to change the pattern of their lives, 46.06% of them have air-conditioners, despite the coasts of electricity consumption, and what it pose as an additional burden, as well as the use of electric food heaters with the volume 13.29%.
  • This figures, despite they are small, they reveal on some contradictions in the daily life of the middle-income individuals, whose interests have turned to providing the necessities including eating, clothing and medical treatment.
  •  Only 4.95% of the families use the black and white traditional TVs, and 13.45% use the traditional video-recorder, after the satellite channels imposed themselves on all the families, while the radio kept its place inside the middle class houses with 66.15% and the use of the computers didn’t exceed the rate of 40.80%, meaning that about 60% of these families are not able to acquire a computer, or they still consider it as a luxury, although it has become a necessary means of research and study for the students as well as improving the educational and cultural level of the individual and to connect with the outside word.
  • The car is necessary but not accessible to all

  • The study shows that 38.95% of the families whose incomes range between 20.000 and 30.000 have a car, compared to 48.69% who were unable to acquire a car because of the high prices.
  • 58.42% of people from the middle class confirm they do not have internet at homes, compared to only 22.41 who participated in the network.
