Egypt president’s son fuels tensions, fans attack Algeria embassy

Egyptian president's elder son intensified tensions between Algeria and Egypt as he said his country should “take a stance” and respond to what he called “terror, hostility” and mistreatment of Egyptians by the Algerians.

  • “The tensions reveal Algeria’s grudge and ill-will toward Egypt,” Alae Mubarak told en Egyptian TV satellite channel.
  • “It is impossible that we as Egyptians take this, we have to stand up and say ‘enough. There should be a stance, we have had enough.”
  • “When you insult my dignity…I will beat you on the head,” said the Egyptian businessman.
  • Hundreds of Egyptian angry fans have demonstrated next to the Algerian embassy since Thursday following their country’s defeat at the hands of Antar Yahia in a play-off on Wednesday in Sudan. It was Algeria’s first World Cup ticket since 1986.
  • At least 11 policemen in charge of protecting the embassy were hurt as the demonstrators threw stones and Molotov cocktails at the building.
  • The fans burnt Algeria’s national flag, chanted anti-Algerian slogans, broke cars and shop windows.
  • Tensions were triggered when Egyptian stonesthrowing fans attacked a bus carrying the Algerian team after their arrival to Cairo ahead of Saturday’s match. Four players were injured.
  • Shortly after Egypt’s win over Algeria 2-0, fans attacked Algerian people injuring at least 20. Algeria’s foreign ministry said no death case was reported among the fans.
