Egypt’s AL nominee, Al-Fiqqi, seeks Algeria support
Algeria has called Arab countries to reach a consensus over one personality to be nominated as Arab League new Secretary General, rather than resorting to elections, given that only two candidates are racing for the next month elections.
- Algeria’s position was expressed on Thursday by Foreign Minister, Mourad Medelci, upon receiving Egypt’s nominee for the elections of AL, Mustapha Fiqqi, who arrived on Thursday to Algiers in a two-day working visit, coming from Mauritania, as part of a Maghreb tour, to campaign for his nomination. Al Fiqqi competes with Qatar’s nominee Abdurrahman Attia.
In fact Algeria is a bit embarrassed in terms of choosing between the two aforementioned candidates, regarding the tight relationships shared with both Qatar and Egypt.
Egypt Middle East state run news agency quoted al-Fiqqi as saying that “Algeria Foreign Minister told me his country favours to reach a consensus over the successor candidate to current AL Secretary General, Amru Mussa.”
Mr al-Fiqqi added that Mr Medelci told him that “Algeria doesn’t support or oppose either candidate, but wants member countries to select a new leader based on consensus, especially as the league has a crucial role to play in regional developments.”
