European Union congratulates Bouteflika on his re-election

The European Union has congratulated the President of Algeria Abdelaziz Bouteflika on his re-election for a third mandate in the April 9th presidential polls.

“Algeria is an important and reliable political and economic partner of the European Union in the region of Mediterranean. Its role in the mutual fight against terrorism and illegal immigration is significant and irreplaceable,” said an EU Czech Presidency statement.

It added that the EU remains ready to support Algeria on its way towards economic prosperity, stability and further development of democracy.

Bouteflika was re-elected to his third consecutive term in office, with 90.24 percent of the votes cast in Thursday’s presidential election.
