A spokesman for the national coordination of former Sahara detainees, Naceredine Abdellaziz, has told “Echorouk” that the outstanding file of former Sahara detainees has been duly conveyed to the President of the Republic Mr. Abdellaziz Bouteflika.

• He said that such a vexed file had finally been conveyed by the head of the commission for the protection and safeguarding of human rights Farouk Ksentini to the Presidency of the Republic.

• He added that the file was now under the close perusal of the head of state himself who will hopefully take the necessary steps to resolve the intricacies of this pending issue once and for all.

• The former Sahara detainees who had been held with no charge weighing on them for about 4 straight years in the nineties in detention centers in the  regions of Aïn Emgel, Oued Namous and Reggane in Algeria’s deep south are now demanding proper compensation from the relevant authorities for the severe hardship and ordeal they suffered throughout their arbitrary detention.
