Fishing minister: Sardines are scarce in the Algerian waters

The sardines’ prices have skyrocketed to an unprecedented level reaching 800 Algerian Dinars per kilogram and we’ll rise even higher to reach the starling price of 900 DZD at earliest.

  •

  • This situation has made quite an impact on the Algerian consumers in the sense that this highly praised type of fish has become out reach of the plain citizens. Figures have revealed that the yearly average consumption of sardines doesn’t exceed 2.4 KGS per habitat as opposed to the 6.5 KGS required by the World Health Organization.

  •

  • Most of the sardines’ sellers have indicated to Echourouk that the Algerian citizens are turning their heads on this product because of its high price. The average price varies between 250 and 300 DZD per kilogram in the seashore cities while the price is between 600 and 800 DZD in the inland towns.

  •

  • Most of the experts have indicated that the reasons behind this explosion in prices are due to the drastic decrease of the Algerian stock, noting that the quota of the Algerian fishermen doesn’t exceed 10% in comparison with the past.

  •

  • In a declaration to Echourouk, the fishing minister Abdellah Kahnafou has indicated that the problem is closely linked to the shrink of the fish stock which is not only an Algerian phenomenon, noting that the international organizations have associated this problem to various factors including pollution and climatic changes.

  •

  • He has also added that speculation has noting to do with the prices’ upsurge, linking it rather to the scarcity of this product in the Algerian territorial waters.
