The supporters of the Algerian squad who moved to the Cairo stadium wished the match between Algeria and Egypt would end with one zero in order to ensure the qualification for the World Cup South Africa 2010, however, this did not happen because of the second goal signed by the striker Imad Mitib in the final stretch of the confrontation.  

  • The second goal postponed the joy of 35 million Algerians to a later date, as the Algerians thought that luck was with the Algerians, however, they discovered that they were wrong following the match and after the dangerous assaults by the Egyptian supporters near the stadium and in some streets of Cairo, which caused injuries among the Algerian supporters.
  • Violence by the Egyptian supporters surprised the Algerian journalists and supporters because they thought that 80 million Egyptians were happy and that they will celebrate only, however, they attacked every Algerian in the streets of Cairo.

  • An Algerian pregnant woman aborted following severe beating

  • An Algerian pregnant woman in the third month was severely beaten along with her husband by the Algerian supporters following the return of the Algerian delegation in a bus.
  • Eye witnesses said the 29 year woman was urgently taken to hospital, and was forced to abort because the fetus was in danger and may affect her health if she did not abort.
  • “They stopped our bus above the Nile River, stole the keys and attacked us”

  •  “We have been brutally assaulted by a group of Egyptians who were celebrating in one of the Nile’s corridors. When they saw the bus of the Algerian delegation they took the opportunity to break through the windows and attacked the driver and asked him to go out of bus. The driver refused that’s why they start throwing stones and stole the keys, and then they enter the bus and start beating us before people, who did not intervene, but unfortunately there was a car of police in the opposite way, they fled as soon as they saw police. The driver of the bus found the keys and took us directly to the hotel”, a group of Algerian supporters said.
  • “We were besieged in the stadium for hours of the night”

  • While some Algerian supporters left the stadium and suffered violence by the Egyptian supporters, others have been besieged in the cars park adjacent to the stadium by a crowd of Egyptian supporters, who were waiting them outside.
  • “I did not understand why they attacked us despite they won. We have waited for long hours in the cars park adjacent to the stadium, because a group of Egyptian supporters who were waiting us outside. Fortunately the Algerian embassy intervened, as the Algerian ambassador to Egypt Abdelkader Hadjar came and asked the Egyptian authorities to provide security, and then police accompanied us to our place of residence”.
  • Supporters of the Algerian squad called on in Egypt the Algerian embassador Abdelkader Hadjar in order expedite their departure from Egypt, so some of them expressed fear of staying in Egypt for a week following the scenario of horror they lived Saturday night in Cairo and its suburbs, noting that most of the return flights of the Algerian delegation started on next Thursday 19 November.
  • “We did not want to stay in Egypt, as we were afraid to go out into the streets or travel on tours of historical areas in Egypt. We asked the Algerian embassy to find a solution as soon as possible in order to leave the country of horror”, “M.B” one Algerian supporter who has been beaten in Egypt said.
  • “We have been left without security protection”

  • The reason why the Egyptians managed to beat the Algerian supporters was the lack of security, because it was supposed that every bus of the Algerian delegation in Egypt was protected by two policemen at least, however, some buses left the stadium without any security escort, thing which facilitated the process the attacks by the Egyptians.
  • “When we left the stadium we were safe, but when we approached the center of Cairo, the driver took us in one of the narrow streets. There were no security services and the Egyptians attacked us, and we escaped miraculously. We were frightened of going to hospitals for treatment because of the lack of security, despite the serious injuries among us”, an Algerian supporter said.
  • “Algerian women missing in Cairo after being attacked by Egyptians”  

  • The Algerian women who went to Egypt in order to support the Algerian squad have been also attacked them verbally and physically.
  • “I never expected this violence in Egypt, particularly since the Egyptians won with two goals. We were in a car inside the crowd, and Egyptians attacked us as soon as they saw the Algerian flag in the hands of my friends, they throw stones and iron rods. We were obliged to hide in a hotel until Sunday morning, then an Algerian took us in the residence of our delegation”, an Algerian woman said.
