Foreign press media in Algeria to cover elections

A total of 900 reporters covered the Algerian presidential elections. Of them, 130 work for international news channels and agencies.

  • An official at the International Press Centre based in Algiers said all the requests submitted by reporters to cover the elections were approved.
  • “A total of 130 foreign reporters’ accreditation demands were accepted. Most of them represent European media like France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and the U.K.,” the same source told Echorouk.
  • Russian, Chinese and Japanese reporters were present as well.
  • TV channels also covered the elections including Al-Arabiya, Medi 1 Sat and France 24. The reason behind the absence of Al-Jazeera is still unknown.

  • Reporter of Saudi Al-Ryad newspaper said the most significant point in the elections is the victory of Bouteflika over who wanted to incite the Algerian people against him. “His speeches have always focused on reconciliation and peace while the Algerian people have considered security as a priority before food and job since he was in power in 1999.”

  • Al-Hurra’s reporter said Algeria witnesses continuing controversy among government supporters and opposition. “The result is the absence of dialogue.”

  • Morocco-based Medi 1 Sat TV channel held on Thursday an open day on the Algerian presidential elections through four news reports. It will hold on Friday two hours of analysing and discussing the event.

  • BBC Arabic: “we will do reports on Algeria when we go back to London”
  •  
  • BBC Arabic representative said the British channel was present in Algeria to cover the poll. “BBC Arabic promises to broadcast a series of reports as soon as we get back to London.”
