The Algerian League for Human Rights Defence quoted French lawyers saying Paris plans to deport about 30,000 Algerians living illegally on its land.

“We have learnt from some French lawyers that Paris plans to deport at least 30,000 Algerian illegal immigrants. The interior ministry had assessed the situation,” the League said in a release.

“The French foreign ministry discussed with Algerian authorities about the deportation of Algerians who are living illegally in France,” it added.

According to the League, other European countries such as Belgium and Italy conduct consultations with Algerian authorities to deport illegal immigrants.

“Every year, European countries deport more than 5,000 to Algeria,” said the League.

It condemned the “European policy for its strict measures against immigrants.”

The League also said “the number of Algerian illegal immigrants arrested on Europan land, sea and air borders reached 15,587 in 2015.”

It added that cost guards foiled 1,206 attempts to cross the sea to reach Europe illegally in 2016.

It believes that this figure does not reflect the real number of illegal immigrants as some boats were not detected and other drew.

Earlier, national defence vice minister Gaid Salah said sea forces have foiled an attempt of more that 10,000 people including 318 foreigners to smuggle themselves to Europe since 2005.
