Francisco Boyo to Echorouk:”The Algeria squad can fare well in 2010 World Cup”
Francisco Boyo
The former talented goalkeeper of the Spanish national squad and the prestigious team of Real Madrid, Francisco Boyo, has granted an interview to the newspaper “Echorouk” in which he dwells on the remarkable performance achieved by the Algeria football line-up in the 1982 World cup in Spain and on the chances of the “Greens” of today in the upcoming World cup tournament to be hosted by South Africa starting from next June.
-
Echorouk : To begin with, what can you say to the readers of Echorouk?
-
-
Francisco Boyo : Well, I want to extent my best wishes to all the readers of this successful newspaper (Echorouk) which is doing very well in terms of journalistic work and readership-loyalty in Algeria and elsewhere in the world. I wish all the Echorouk readers all the best straight from friendly country Spain.
-
-
Echorouk : Going back in time. How did your transfer to Real Madrid take place and for what financial package?
-
-
Boyo : Well, I was playing with FC Seville. I stayed in this club for 3 straight years before getting an offer to join the prestigious side of Real Madrid in 1986. I then signed with Real Madrid a 5 year renewable contract for a financial package amounting then to 8 hundred thousand Euros.
-
-
I played as a goalkeeper for Real Madrid until the 1996/1997 season and after 1997 I decided to quit the football world.
-
-
All in all, I played a total of 542 Spanish first-league matches with first FC Seville and then with Real Madrid. This figure is a top record after that secured by former FC Barcelona player Anadoni Zubezareta who played 622 matches in all in the Liga championship.
-
-
Echorouk : What did you achieve in terms of titles and trophies with Real Madrid?
-
-
Boyo : I am very proud of my brilliant achievements with Real Madrid. We won 6 Liga championship titles and 4 cup trophies in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1993. I am proud of having contributed as a goalkeeper to this remarkable performance made over the years by the Real Madrid squad.
-
-
Echorouk : Back to the present now, you seem to know well Algerian and Arab Football as you are now a football consultant with Al jazeera sports channel, according to you what are the chances of the Algerian National Football team in the forthcoming World Cup tournament in South Africa?
-
-
Boyo : Well, I should say that honestly the Algeria squad are able to do well in the 2010 World cup in South Africa. We in Spain we remember well the very good performance achieved in the 1982 World cup contest when the Greens of Algeria outplayed with flying colours the indomitable German national team by 2 goals to 1 in Gijon.
-
-
So, I am confident that the Algeria line-up can fare well in the 2010 World cup as the team is mostly made up of very talented professional players who have done well in the various European championships.
-
-
With a lot of concentration and self-confidence, the Algerian national squad have the ability to secure a berth in the second round of the 2010 World cup competition provided the Algerian players firmly believe in their intrinsic potentialities and show unity, cohesion and solidarity on the pitch in South Africa.
