French citizenship to Algerians born before 1 January 1963

The French National Assembly is set to introduce a further amendment to the draft law entitled: “Equality and Citizenship” presented during a Council of Ministers’ meeting held last April in Paris.

Indeed, being the last major five-year legislative project of President François Hollande, the draft law “Equality and Citizenship” is currently in open session at the French National Assembly until 1 July 2016.

This draft law is backed by Patrick Kanner, Minister of the City, in collaboration with Emmanuelle Cosse, Housing Minister and the Secretary of State for genuine Equality Ericka Bareigts and is meant as a legislative response to the “territorial, social and ethnic apartheid” deplored by the Prime Minister, Manuel Valls.

This amendment, supported by 95 deputies, provides for the granting of French citizenship, at the request of the person expressing this wish, to the Algerians born in France or in Algeria before 1 January 1963 of Algerian father or mother after forfeited by law No. 66-945 of 20 December 1966 amending the order No. 62-825 of 21 July 1962 on certain provisions concerning the French nationality.
