French Presidential Elections Steal The Spotlight From Algeria Legislative Elections

French Presidential Elections are stealing the spotlight from the Algerian Legislative Elections, as Algerians are following these days with great interest the electoral campaign of the capital Paris and its environs, and the statements of the candidates as well, especially concerning the Algerian community and the programs on residency and visa procedures, and the situation of Algerians in this country, which has over 5 million Algerian citizens and even their view of Islam and Muslims.

Political, economic programs and even debates between the French candidates attracted the Algerians’ attention because of the strategic vision and solutions to social problems such as health, education and retirement.

Social networks are full of reactions and comments about the most convincing candidate. On the other hand, the legislative elections in Algeria have no news, at least to the present time, as most of Algerians do not know their candidates, and appear completely indifferent to those who will represent them in the upcoming elections, despite the propaganda and marketing campaigns for this election in the absence of a model of a political personality that has the ability to bring the attention of voters, whether with a strong political and persuasive discourse or announcing on a program in a realistic way and away from populism.

Dr. Charifi Yahia, a professor in political sociology, told Echorouk, that in the absence of real polls on the subject, it is possible to draw on the historical and social data concerning the Algerian emigrants in France.

“Algerian public opinion pays large attention to the French Presidential Elections at the expense of the Algerian Legislative Alections, that are scheduled for May 4, due to the large number of Algerian expatriate community in France, where Algerian families are keen to follow the directions of the person who will govern the country, because of its impact on the French people in general and the Algerian community in particular”.

“Algerians believe that the elections in our country will not change their situation, because they have lost confidence in the political parties in Algeria, in addition to their lack of means of persuasion”.

“If the absence of political programs is a sufficient reason for the Algerians’ lack of interest and their reluctance to meet the election dates, does the young Algerian really know the election’s programs?” “I do not think so, because a large group of society is still worried about the daily problems”.
