Government refuses old cars' import despite insistence from W.T.O and E.U
Minister of Finance, Karim Djoudi, said Algeria refuses importing cars less than three years' old, whatever the results of this resolution on the stance of international organizations, particularly the World Trade Organization (WTO), which asked Algeria to join the international body.

Karim Djoudi told “Echorouk”, on the sidelines of a meeting designed to discuss the government’s action plan at the national council that the decision to stop the import of cars less than three years’ old was resolved legally after the deputies’ endorsement of the additiuonal financial law of 2006.

The Government has no intention to reconsider it for the time being”, he added.

The Government’s position came after the confirmation by the Minister of Trade, Elhachmi djaâboub, saying among the points that remain unresolved and need negotiations between Algeria and the World Trade Organization and the partnership agreement with the EU, mainly relate to the opening of the Algerian market for old cars coming from abroad because the Algerian government fear, as he put it, for the citizens’ security and safety particularly after discovering that this kind of imported cars do not tally with the declared information.

The Government also refuses to lift the ban on the import of cars less three years’ old, despite the criticism against the decision levelled by MPs during discussion on the financial regulations, that’s why, it was obliged to impose a resolution on the deputies through passing it as an order via the finance law of 2006.
