GPS System To Be Officially Launched In Algeria In March 2018

The GPS system will be officially launched in Algeria on March 1, 2018, according to the National Institute of Maps and Remote Detection of the Ministry of National Defense, thus allowing Algerians to use the GPS system to identify neighborhoods, streets, public buildings and various sites.

The aerial, ground, administrative and political maps of Algeria’s territory estimated at 3,620 will be ready by the end of 2019.
Major General Omar Farouk Zerhouni, head of the Department of Geography and Remote Detection of the National People’s Army, pointed in a statement to “Echorouk” on the sidelines of the open doors event held by the National Institute of maps and remote detection on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, to the great role played by this very institute, which was established in 1967.
 Its goals and tasks are summarized in the completion of various maps, especially those related to the educational system in particular, by providing a set of accurate information on the national territory by the completion of various maps, including air, land, administrative and political, in addition to collecting information, and then re-processing them according to the basis of the new available data through the use of optimized ground images via various satellites in order to wind up the research academy work in the geographical areas of information and the latter is  kept in memory through proper archival storage.
Major General Farouk Zerhouni added that the National Institute of Remote Mapping and Research is versed in the fields of research and development through the establishment of a special department in this field, notably in the applied fields, for all geographical sciences.
The institute, he added, provides all the necessary scientific and technical support for the various research and production structures of the National Institute for Maps and Detection which seeks from its inception to accomplish and fulfill its tasks in the field of providing maps and basic equipment.
The National Institute of Maps and Remote Detection deals with a wide range of activities related to national defense, agriculture, urbanization, regional development, telecommunications, energy, public works, land surveying and all regional and local structures and institutions involved in fostering local development.
For his part, the technical director of the National Institute of Maps and Remote Detection, said that the official coming into force of the “GPS” system in Algeria is slated for the beginning of March 2018, through the exploitation of 146 stations via satellite by the National Institute of maps and remote detection under the close supervision of the National People’s Army (NPA) across the national territory in cooperation with national communication partners.
On the other hand, he further explained that the geographical, aerial, land, administrative and political geographic maps, estimated at 3,620, are of high accuracy and are specific to the region of Algeria from east to west, north to south and all its borders will be ready by the end of 2019.
In the same line, the technical Director of the Institute affirmed that the maps will carry all the information and data relating to 14 coastal provinces of the country.
In contrast, two aircraft equipped with the latest digital monitoring and visualization technologies were used for the 1,500 GPS points in the south, the far south and the vast Algerian border areas, he underscored to this effect.
