Hundreds of Africans “Invade” Djanet Region To Loot Gold

The security services of the Djanet department in southern Algeria have arrested 44 African nationals in the framework of anti-illegal immigration operations in the region.
Since Tuesday, the security services have been rounding up dozens of African nationals to be brought before the courts. Under the applicable procedures, deportations are carried out from Djanet towards the province of Tamanrasset, including towards the border post of In Ghezzam, and their ultimate re-entry into their respective bordering countries.
With regard to this burning issue, the security services have been striving in the recent period to arrest the smuggling groups that are active in the search for gold, after the city of Djanet has been the chosen destination for hundreds of African nationals who are active in operations to search for gold in innovative ways, via the setting up of workshops to break the gold stones in agreement with the owners of some local farms, who are paid hefty money by the gold prospectors, an illicit activity rejected by many citizens of the entire region.
The latter filed numerous complaints to the local security services and expressed serious concern over the damage done to the southern city and to the safety of its inhabitants owing the dreaded spread of insecurity there.
