Illegal immigrants clash with security forces in southern Italy

African and Maghreban, including Algerian illegal immigrants, protested Friday morning in a small province of Calabria, southern Italy, to express their anger concerning their living conditions, after a whole night of clashes with security forces that caused damage and several injuries.

  •
  • Hundreds of immigrant workers clustered at dawn to pursue the protests that started the night before amid a heavy atmosphere that forced the local authorities to close schools and shops. Scores of illegal immigrants including Tunisians, Moroccans and Algerians were bracing for a large protest in a region that counts more than 15 thousand immigrants, most of them working in the fields.
  •   The protesters, who blocked most of the roads, reacted against the inhuman living conditions and discrimination and called for the meeting of the local authorities at a time when the riot-police deployed to avoid troubles.
  •
  • Dozens of protesters have been arrested and transferred before the public prosecutor, while media announced important damage including dozens of cars burnt to ashes as well as several shops and properties.
  •
  • According to “ La Stampa” and “La Republica” the Algerians who were among the protesters were raising slogans like “ One Two Three Viva l’Algérie” and called for an immediate repatriation to their home country to be released from the Hellish conditions in which they were living in Calabria.
  •
  • Several Human Rights Associations have already asked from the Italian authorities to improve the worker’s living conditions, but the calls fell on deaf ears.
