Religious affairs sector unions hailed the appointment of Mohamed Aissa as Algeria’s religious affairs minister as he is young and has a Doctorate degree.

Chairman of the Imams’ National Independent Council Djamel Ghoul expressed his hope that this “change would be blessed for the sector and unions as the new minister is a real doctor.”

“He is young and able to treat problems in the religious affairs sector better than an old man,” he added in a clear illusion to former minister Abdellah Ghoulamallah.

Ghould believes that the religious affairs sector has many issues which need to be resolves such as the Salafist trend spread in mosques and the revalorization of imams’ social role.

The religious affairs unions call on the new minister to deal with them as a social and political partner.

“My organization is here to help Mohamed Aissa in the service of the sector,” said Ghoul.
