In response to MPs obstinacy to reduce women’s quota in electoral lists, women organizations request President to intervene
Women's organizationS addressed a letter to the president of the Republic to criticize the MPs decision to block the 30% quota in lectoral lists for women and reduce it to 20%. The women organization took the MP move as challenging the political and popular will.
- The letter which Echorouk possess a copy of, expresses the feeling of astonishment within women organizations as to the legal council of the lower house of parliament which want to pass a 20% quota instead of the 30% proposed by the government.
- According to a draft bill issued by the government, political parties can benefit from exceptional financial aid from the Stat in accordance to the number of elected women candidates.
- The draft bill came to determine mechanisms meant to end inequality between men and women. It imposes quota system and alternation principle in candidates’ list.
- Women’s representation in the People’s National Assembly (APN) is estimated at 7.7 percent. That means 30 women deputies out of 389 and 3 percent in the Council of Nation (Senate). That means 5 seats out of 144 senators.
